Councillor Heather King & Carroll Allan are volunteers: Day 94

Background Confession:
I am really cheap with my votes.

I believe every vote counts and I want mine to count.

The Birth of the Candidate Volunteer Series:
I wanted to know how much bang I was going to get for each vote, so I decided to offer give each candidate blog space to show us his/her passion for Delta.

I figured that if the candidates were so darn concerned about Delta, then they would have a long list of volunteer work that clearly demonstrates their passion for Delta.

Past performance (extensive volunteer work) demonstrates future commitment to Delta.

AN OPEN INVITATION TO ALL CANDIDATES:
Send your volunteer list showing how you've given back to Delta and I'll feature you in the blog.
Bonus: I will add you to my Heroes List (NOTE: a volunteer is a hero)

Heather Didn't put up this sign either: Pop Quiz #2:Answer & Winner: What was this building's original use?

Pop Quiz #2

Answer, Rant (sorry, same rant as yesterday, so if you've read it, skip to the bottom) and Winner!
Yes, yes, this sign is a disgrace.

Ironically, it welcomes visitors to 4450 Clarence Taylor Crescent.

What was this building's original use?

Taken Tuesday, September 27, 2011
Answer:
In 1968 Delta Municipal Hall moved from 4858 Delta Street to 4450 Clarence Taylor Crescent. 4858 Delta Street is now the home of the Delta Museum.

Irony/Rant:
  • This sign is just a couple of doors down from the present  City Hall
  • This totally tacky sign has been up for YEARS and the Terry Fox signs were taken down within HOURS of being put up!
I am not making this up!Thankfully Heather rescued the Terry Fox Signs.
(Click to see how Heather King rescued the Terry Fox signs -- Shocking, but true. Really you won't believe how quickly things can be resolved at City Hall, if common sense is used!)

Heather King didn't put this sign up: Pop Quiz answer and winners: Day 94

Pop Quiz #1: Answer, rant, and winners!

What is wrong with this photo?

Photo taken Tuesday, September 27, 2011

Answer:

The Delta Courts were closed as of November 1, 2002

Irony/Rant:
  • This sign is right in front of City Hall
  • The obsolete Delta Courts sign gets to stay up almost NINE YEARS past it's due date and the Terry Fox signs were taken down within HOURS of being put up!

I am not making this up! Thankfully Heather King put on her:
  • ROYAL PURPLE CAPE and
  • a rare and wonderful ingredient that is so often missing when "status quo bureaucracy" mates with "butt-stupid red tape", common sense
YUP, Heather KING used common sense and solved a glitch at Delta City Hall!

Who are these candidates?
With every new candidate announcing it gets more exciting, but I found my self asking, "Who are these people?"

I figure that if they are so darn concerned about Delta, then they would have a long list of volunteer work that clearly demonstrates their passion for Delta.

Basically, my thinking is that past performance (extensive volunteer work) demonstrates future commitment to Delta.

Let's find out who the candidates are!
If a candidate sends me their volunteer list, I will showcase in the blog, so we can see how how they have given back to Delta.

Bonus: I will add them on to my Heroes List (a volunteer is a hero).

  • 3 years on Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission;
  • 3 years Rotary club, (I saw him  manning the concession booth at movie night and I hear he spent a zillion hours laying sod at the Rotary WaterWorks Park);
  • 10 years: President, head coach, and/or youth coach of the South Delta Triathlon Club; and
  • he organized the first Delta Relay for Life for the Canadian Cancer Society in 2005, with over 700 participants the team raised over $200,000 to fight cancer. (Nice!)
This year Neil also billeted three Tour de Delta racers from Team Energy!

Bonus: I have found some pictures of Neil doing some of his good works:

Councillor Heather King is a volunteer: Day 92

It's election season and I love the sulfuric smell of fireworks mingling with the autumn air!

It's exciting following the news: almost daily a new civic candidate is announcing for Delta.

Lately I have been asking: "Who are these people?"

I figure that if they are so darn concerned about Delta, then they would have a long list of volunteer work that clearly demonstrates their passion for Delta.

What if the sulfuric smell is not the fireworks?  Uck, now there's a reason to do research on a candidate.

Volunteering is so important that LinkedIn, a professional social media site, recently announced that members can now add a  "Volunteer Experience & Causes" field to their LinkedIn Profile

Heather King has a huge volunteer list and in the blog Heather King inspires and leads: Day 43: Leaders Inspire and lead by example, I  referred to her as a "compulsive volunteer". (I meant it in the absolute nicest way possible - It's simple;  she cares, so when she sees an opportunity to help out, she does.)

Heather King volunteered for:
  • Beach Grove Parent Advisory committee (chair 2001 - 2002)
  • Delta District PAC (parent education coordinator 2001 - 2002)
  • Delta Christian Women's Club (Chair) 2000 - 2002
  • volunteer Sundevil football club 2005
  • Rivermania 2007-2008
  • Assistant boys baseball coach (Tsawwassen) 2007 -2008
  • Tsawwassen Minor baseball association Media liaison 2007 - 2008
  • Spirit of BC/Legacies BC - promoting sports for youth in BC 2007 - 2010
  • Great Blue Heron way committee member 2010 - 2011
  • Seniors planning committee member 2010 - present
  •  ***These are in addition to her the committees on council and committees on school board.
To satisfy her "compulsive volunteering", Heather also does lots of "informal" or "unrecognized" volunteering.

Without straining my cranium, three examples come to mind:
1st) the Kings host Tour de Delta athletes. (See blog: Heather King with her Tour de Delta billets: Day 12)

Heather with her boys:   (Left to right) Daniel Holloway (2nd place), teammate, Heather King, and Julian Kyer

2nd)  Heather face paints at the Boundary Bay Beach Clean-up to celebrate International Youth Day
3rd) Heather rescued the Terry Fox signs (See blog: Councillor Heather King Rescues the Terry Fox Run Signs: Day 79)

Council Candidate, Neil Corbett,  also has a rather extensive list of volunteer work that can be viewed on Neil's  blogsite .

Neil Corbett's volunteer list:
  • 11 years as Tour de Delta Volunteer Director, Head Race Marshal and Web site master;
  • 3 years on Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission;
  • 3 years Rotary club, (I saw him  manning the concession booth at movie night and I hear he spent a zillion hours laying sod at the Rotary WaterWorks Park);

Andrew Conley, another Council Candidate, who I have yet to me, but who includes his volunteer work as part of his resume for council. You can follow Andrew on Facebook.

Andrew Conley's volunteer list:
  • strata council member for the past four year,
  • coaching and managing numerous adult hockey teams,
  • runs an adult softball team in the spring and fall, and
  • assistant coach for a Bantam girls' fastpitch team in Tsawwassen.
Stop --  Whoa did I just read Bantam Girls fastpitch? NO WAY! Andrew is a Fastpitch  Coach? We are an Invaders family! Hats off to Andrew! I think I have to make room for him on my Heroes List!  OOPS, Sorry Robert, but you just got bumped to #6th spot, but still that's really a good number, I was 6 once!

Barb's Heroes List:
  1. Councillor Heather King, Mayor Candidate
  2. Neil Corbett , Council Candidate,
  3. Francis Van Roode, VP Sunfish
  4. Philip Raphael, Editor South Delta Leader
  5.  Andrew Conley, Council Candidate
  6. Councillor Robert Campbell
Every time a new face appears on the Delta Election slate, it's time to bring out the fireworks and celebrate, but do your due diligence and find out how they have demonstrated their passion for Delta. Find out if they, are true volunteers with a demonstrated passion for Delta.

If you have a volunteer role for Heather or a concern, contact her.  Her information is at the top of the page. She WANTS to talk to you.
