Heather King face painting at Beach Clean up: Day 48: Not just another day at the beach

August 12, 2011 International Youth Day and Boundary Bay Beach Clean-up was extraordinary, truly extraordinary: 95 people  came out to clean-up Centennial Beach. Actually if you count my mom, the four chefs, myself, Maddy's Dad, and the camera chicky-poo from the South Delta Leader = 103!
Clean-up:

Most of the volunteer garbage picker-uppers were youth from Tsawwassen and Ladner, but the event attracted all ages (think mom) from North Delta, Surrey and from Newfoundland (True, story at the end).
Impressive haul! Thanks Neil (Corbett)

Look past the happy-ham and see the cakes from Safeway
and all the raffle prizes from local merchants!

Food:

In my books, an event is not an event without food! Trust me, this was an event extraordinaire: the food was exceptional!

Fruit trays from Save-On-Foods, veggie trays and dip from Thrifty Foods and cakes from Safeway! Check it out! (Little grocery store humour.)
Gees, another happy-ham, no wonder, check out the veggie and fruit trays

Apparently their parents don't have cameras.

Certificates of Appreciation:

Times have changed, now a high school student has to complete 30 hours of volunteer hours to graduate.  Special thanks to Andrew at Pacific Advertising for printing off the beautiful certificates of appreciation. Like Murray delivering a hotdog, Andrew delivers service with a smile!

My favourtie story of the day:

Meet Tony, a Newfie riding across Canada to raise money for disabled orphaned children in the Ukraine! (Er, can I say Newfie? Is it politically correct?) Heather has Newfoundland roots (no, not grey roots, Newfie roots) and a huge passion for children: instant kinship developed. Also meet Jr Andrew, Tony's mate who is taking the picture as Heather paints Tony face.
Tony another Hero - getting his face painted for the kids
The best part is today, Monday, August 15, 2011, Tony and his team started their journey across Canada. They are going coast-to-coast (Mini geography lesson: from Vancouver, BC to St. John's, Newfoundland.) Today they are riding to Hope, BC.

I like the guys, I like their mission, and I like their story, so I'll be weaving their story into the blog.  If you want to follow their story without my 2 cents worth you can follow Tony on Twitter @2011bikerider or go to their website at Operations Can Be Done.

Honestly, he isn't sticking his tongue out at me (I was being good)
