Councillor Heather King receives an email: Day 99

I have a new hero to add to my list!

Ferd, my friend and fellow Ambassador Toastmasters member, wrote an email to Heather (he CC'd me and gave me permission to publish his letter).

Heather is no stranger to the Ambassadors Toastmasters Club, as she has come as my guest a number of times.

The last time she visited she us was in July.

She is a good sport and the club loves it when she can attend: in February, in recognition of Toastmasters week, the Ambassadors voted to make Heather an honourary Ambassador member. (Er, we were also shamelessly doing a membership drive and wanted the publicity!)

Ambassadors' President Godfrey Nash and Councillor Heather King

She is a great sport

Here is Ferd's letter:

Hi Heather,

This new gas tax the Mayors will vote on is of great concern to me as I fear for the direction we are headed.

Everyone knows that the price of fossil fuels does impact the economy. The price for gas at the pumps is far more reaching than just the cost of operating our personal vehicles. The cost of shipping, business, our personal and professional lives will cost more as fossil fuels is the root of all energy we use today. Fossil fuels are used to create and maintain all energy creating devices.

When the cost of gas is raised at the pumps whether it is a new tax or price an increase per barrel there is a domino effect thru the economic process, we will see that our goods and services will cost us more at the till.

The new gas tax whether it is the carbon or transit tax may be good for the government as it provides more revenue for their projects. Higher gas prices at pumps raises the retail prices of goods and services at the tills thus higher sales taxes for the consumer to pay. But all this comes with a price, can we afford to continue going down this road?

I think not, please reflect on these thoughts.

Respectfully yours,

Ferd

Ferd Lamens is my new hero, because he took the time to write Heather about his concerns!

Fred Lamens is hero #10

(Gees, sorry Robert, you keep getting bumped down the list, but I am sure you understand that Ferd's concern is very, very relevant to everyone in Delta, and the Metro Vancouver, for that matter!

POP Quiz #5: Why do you think Mr. Paton was chosen?

 Pop Quiz #5

Special thanks to my Facebook and Twitter friends and folllowers, who supplied me with the "answers" 'er "one-liners" for today's quiz.

As promised, I will not reveal my source, but know that my heart is filled with gratitude for all the help.

I am still chuckling over all the answers...especially the ones that I couldn't repeat in case Mom reads the blog! (Fear of soap anxiety hitting me again!)

NOTE: I supplied I) Dunno for nostalgic reasons.
Dunno was my favourite answer in school!

Why do you think Mr. Paton was chosen to go with Mayor Jackson to Ottawa?

A)     You need to be part of the Lois Jackson “Delta Independent Voters Association” to
       qualify for these expensive excursions.

B)     This may well be their last chance while in office to use public funds for hidden
       personal agendas.

C)     There wasn’t a vacation cruise from Vancouver to Ottawa.

D)     There was a chance for Ian to catch Paul Anka at the Starbucks on Queen St. near
       Parliament Hill.

E)   To get to the other side.

F)    Because Ian wasn't on council when Lois and George got to go to India.

G)   Ian has to go to prove his loyalty to Lois and the other "Independents".

H)   George was busy.

I)    DUNNO

J)   All of the above.

Councillor Heather King & Scott Broderick are volunteers: Day 98

Background Confession:
I am really cheap with my votes.
I believe every vote counts and I want mine to count.

The Birth of the Candidate Volunteer Series:
I wanted to know how much bang I was going to get for each vote, so I decided to offer  each candidate blog space to show us his/her passion for Delta.

I figured that if the candidates were so darn concerned about Delta, then they would have a long list of volunteer work that clearly demonstrates their passion for Delta.

Past performance (extensive volunteer work) demonstrates future commitment to Delta.
AN OPEN INVITATION TO ALL CANDIDATES:
Send your volunteer list showing how you've given back to Delta and I'll feature you in the blog.
Bonus: I will add you to my Heroes List (NOTE: a volunteer is a hero)

    Scott Broderick’s Volunteer List
I asked Scott to send me his list, and he did! Thanks Scott! I just copied and pasted.
"Youth Pastor – This was a great fit for me as I was able to pass along my experiences with youth in a manner that was educational but more importantly to offer guidance to those that were experiencing tough times. Being able to share the challenges that I faced growing up with today’s youth allowed them to know that they aren’t alone as we most often feel when we hit speed bumps in life. It also allowed youth to learn from those that have experienced the same challenges which allowed them to better handle theirs. I’d have to say it was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had.

Seniors – This was another rewarding experience for me volunteering my time on Sundays at a local retirement home to fill in for their pastor when needed. I remember when I first accepted to fill in for their pastor and I didn’t know what I could do for them or what I could bring to the table that would be meaningful to them. But I learned very quickly that even though an age gap may give the appearance of having nothing in common it was quite the opposite. I found that my own life experiences where not different from theirs, the present day challenges I faced were similar to theirs and that the wants and needs were very common. I really want to bring what I’ve learned to council to help our local community to provide for those that really have paved the way for the generations to follow.

Theatre – I first acquired the acting bug when I was 12 years old and since then I have volunteered many hours to various theatre groups. I’ve volunteered my time a youth program coordinator which allowed me to continue the great work of those that mentored me as a youth. I lost track a few years ago on just how many productions I’ve been a part of but one thing is for sure, it’s been a lot. I’ve done everything you could imagine right from acting to technical and even directing. Theatre has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember and I want to bring that same passion to council to better not just the lives of those in arts but to all Delta residents.

I’ve also volunteered my time raising funds for cancer research, raising awareness and supporting an increase to EI sickness benefits for those battling serious illness and I’ve volunteered my time with the Fight HST campaign.

All these experiences have been rewarding and I would recommend to everyone to volunteer for something you believe in. We sometimes think we don’t have time but even an hour a week can make all the difference in the world to help better the lives of those around you."
Scott thanks for making it easy for me to copy and paste your extensive volunteer list! I truly believe volunteers are heroes and you're number 6 on my list!

Happy Campaigning and yes, I will be honoured to be your Facebook friend!

Pop Quiz #4: What is the maximum amount that Delta would pay for the meeting facilitator to schedule meetings for Mayor Jackson and Cllr. Paton in Ottawa?

    Pop Quiz #4:

What is the maximum amount that Delta will pay for the meeting facilitator to schedule meetings for Mayor Jackson and Cllr. Paton in Ottawa?

This is lifted directly from the March 7, 2011Delta Council  minutes

**Delta is "hoping" that Metro Vancouver will contribute, but regardless the maximum is $30,000 -- wow! I don't know how to get a lucrative job like this, but I am interested!

Report by the Human Resources and Corporate Planning Department dated March 2, 2011 regarding Meetings with Federal Officials.
    --  Recommendations Endorsed
    MOVED By Cllr. Hamilton,
    SECONDED By Cllr. Peterson,

    1. THAT a meeting facilitator be retained at a cost not to exceed $30,000 to schedule meetings with key federal government staff in Ottawa to discuss issues of local and regional concern, including:

    1.  Funding for secondary channel dredging.

    1.  Policing and organized crime.

    1. Roberts Bank port expansion environmental assessment review process.

    1.  Cost-sharing for wastewater treatment facility upgrades.

    1.  Port Metro Vancouver payment in lieu of taxes.

    1. THAT Metro Vancouver be requested to contribute towards the costs of the facilitator for issues that have a regional impact.

    1. THAT staff report back following the Ottawa delegation.

If you have a concern, contact Heather King.  Her information is at the top of the page. She WANTS to talk to you.

Pop Quiz #3: Why are Mayor Lois Jackson and Councillor Ian Paton in Ottawa?

Pop Quiz #3: Winner and Answers!

Why are Mayor Lois Jackson and Councillor Ian Paton in Ottawa?

    A) to make friends
    B) to visit MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay (Delta Richmond-East)
    C) to look for funding for river dredging and for resolving the tunnel nightmare
    D) to discuss issues of local & regional concern
    E) dunno
    F) all of the above

    Winners:
Special thanks to Council Candidate Neil Corbett and Scott Broderick who sent me the following tweets:
    •   Neil Corbett
To try and raise fed funds for river dredging and 2nd river crossing. Lois also met with MP KL.
    • Neil Corbett
Hmmm, 2 more? How about strengthening ties with Ottawa and possibly Ladner Harbour redevelopment assistance?

Answers that I found from Web-stalking:

    A) To make friends
This answer is correct - read article.
(She has 1470 Facebook friends, and Ian has 200- surely that's enough!)
Not so, read what she told Dave White at News 1130
Article by Dave White, News 1130, September 17, 2011

     B) to visit MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay
This answer is also correct, sad, but correct - they met Sunday

Sad because, according to Google Maps:
    •  Kerry-Lynne Findlay's office is 2.6 KM (5 minutes) from Delta Municipal Hall, with plenty of free parking
    • Parliament Hill in Ottawa is 4610 KM (65 hours- not crossing the US boarder) from Delta Municipal Hall. Note: there is NO parking at Parliament Hill
Findlay posted this sequence about noon on Sunday, October 2nd, 2011
(Note: You can tell Kerry-Lynne loves her job, as much as Councillor Heather King:

    Kerry-Lynne Findlay

On my way back from meeting with Delta Mayor Jackson spotted this moving through the Rideau Canal!

    Kerry-Lynne Findlay

    Another shot...

    Kerry-Lynne Findlay

Through the locks and on its way!

    Thanks for sharing Kerry-Lynne!

    C) to look for funding for river dredging and for resolving the tunnel nightmare
I am assuming that Pam, Ian's wife is in the know, so this answer has to be correct.
Copied from Ladners Landing Facebook page

via Pam Noble Paton: Ladnerites...just to let you all know...Mayor Jackson and Councillor Paton are in Ottawa looking for funding for river dredging and for resolving the tunnel nightmare. Keep your fingers crossed!· · Saturday at 5:28pm

    D) to discuss issues of local & regional concern
This answer also has to be correct - it's in the minutes
    Ottawa Delegation:
In October 2011, Mayor Jackson will be leading a delegation to Ottawa to meet with federal Ministers and senior government officials to discuss a variety of issues, including the need for funding for secondary channel dredging. This issue has been raised during previous meetings with federal Ministers in 2008 and 2010, and this will be an opportunity to provide an update regarding the Hay & Company report and potential funding sources.
    Meetings with Federal officials (F.18)
    1. schedule meetings with key federal government staff in Ottawa to discuss issues of local and regional concern, including:

    1.  Funding for secondary channel dredging.

    1.  Policing and organized crime.

    1. Roberts Bank port expansion environmental assessment  review process.

    1.  Cost-sharing for wastewater treatment facility upgrades.

    1. Port Metro Vancouver payment in lieu of taxes.
    E) Dunno
This answer is the most correctest

I am not exactly sure which answer above is the correct one, so I'll let you decide.
(Please don't tell mom that I said correctest, I can see her wincing in "Me mind's eye". I can also taste her soap.)
    F) all of the above
Dunno, 'cause now I am confused

    Potential future Pop Quiz questions:
    • Pop Quiz #4: How much $$$ is this delegation to Ottawa going to cost the Delta taxpayers?
    • Pop Quiz #5: Why did two people (if any) have to go to Ottawa? (In the corporate world, I bet they wouldn't send two!)
    • Pop Quiz #6: Mayor Jackson has lead other unsuccessful delegations to Ottawa, why would she think this one would be more successful?
    • Pop Quiz #7: How does an Ottawa meeting facilitator get paid?
