Oh, before I can begin, I must confess.

This blog was made using child labour.

Actually, we shared the division of labour. My daughter baked a pie, I blogged; she edited the blog, I cleaned the kitchen; we both ate apple pie and ice cream! (She found ten mistakes, so she had two scoops of ice cream.)

Thank you Pricilla - my editor, my daughter, and my harshest critic! You do a great job at keeping me humble.

SFU Diwali Celebration Gala

Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated throughout India and around the world.

There were over 300 Indo-Canadian and South Fraser business and community members, as well as SFU alumni, faculty, staff, students and administrators at a dinner featuring South Asian performances and cuisine.

The event raised funds to support student mobility awards which allow SFU students an opportunity to gain valuable experience by working and volunteering in cities and villages throughout India.

The Gala was held at the Bollywood Banquet Hall in Surrey, on Tuesday, October 11.

Timely bit of news - actually it's old news if you've ever been to Tsawwassen, but tomorrow the full Vancouver Sun article will  be published. " Tsawwassen is among the most caucasian part of multi-ethnic Metro Vancouver."

With that in mind, you appreciate the effort that Heather made to get ready for the Gala! Trust me, there is no Diwali shopping in Tsawwassen!

She takes her job and Delta's diversity very seriously!
Heather smiling for the photographer! She was a star - Bollywood look out!

An enchanting evening

It took two hours to get dressed - not including hair, nails, and make-up!

Mostly laughing and learning to walk like ladies!

SFU President Andrew Petter was a skilled emcee.

The introductions were impressive. Amazing how many of our prominent BC citizens are SFU grads!

A large number of Mayors and Councillors from all over the Lower Mainland showed their support by attending.

Councillor King was the only representative from Delta Council!

My well-developed skill of eavesdropping came in very handy.  I gleamed from the murmuring that many were surprised that only Heather came from Delta Council to show her support for the SFU's student mobility awards.

Why wouldn't our other elected leaders attend? Beats me! I can only think of reasons to attend: many of our Delta grads go to the Surrey SFU campus, we share a border with Surrey, and it was an organic opportunity to network with other leaders. Oh, and the food and entertainment were wonderful!

Regardless, Heather did us proud.

It was nice to see Councillors and Mayors from other municipalities seeking Heather out. It was pretty obvious that she is highly respected by the other leaders.

The topic of the election came up frequently - OK, who am I kidding that's all everyone talked about! The others guests let it be known that they are expecting Heather King to be the next Mayor of Delta and that they feel it is time for a change in Delta.

Heather behaved as graciously as she was dressed; she NEVER joined in the negative talk. Her replies were always diplomatic, positive, upbeat and delivered with a smile, "Thank you, that's the plan!  I have bought an extra pair of shoes for all the canvassing and door knocking!"

She is a perfect Ambassador for Delta.

I worked with Barbara when she was chair of  the South Fraser Family Court & Youth Justice Committee - she has passion for Surrey and we share a heart for youth.

4th highlight of the evening (1st getting dressed, 2nd the food, and 3rd the entertainment), was when Councillor Barbara Steele asked ME, if I were running  for council!!!! NO, NO, NO, but the thought still makes me giggle!

Barbara's latest project is senior services for Surrey (say that fast). She offered to meet with Heather and explain all the great things that Surrey is doing for their seniors. She said a lot of what Surrey is doing could also be done in Delta and that they could even look at sharing resources.

Networking at its finest! This was just one conversation of the many that I heard. It paves the way for future collaboration between our two communities.

Barbara's offer is timely. Senior issues are important to Heather. Joan, Heather's mom, lives with the Kings. Heather knows first-hand many of the issues that Delta Seniors face.

Unfortunately just last week Colleen, Heather's Tsawwassen Hub Campaign Organizer, had to step down because Colleen's fiercely-independent 91 year-old mother had to downsize and move to White Rock.

Obviously Mom wanted to stay local, but the TWO year waiting list for both the care facilities in Tsawwassen made Tsawwassen an impossible option for her. As a result Mom was forced to move to White Rock. You know the rest of the story; it's all too common for our seniors, their families, and caregivers!

(On top of the human cost, think of what all the increased daily driving from Tsawassen to White Rock will do to our carbon footprint.  36 km one way = 72 km daily; 504 km weekly = a whopping 26,208 additional km yearly!  Splat, that's one Sasquatch size footprint!)

Heather, Robin Dhir (centre), and Dr. Andy Basi (Delta School Board Candidate).
This was my first time meeting Dr.Andy Basi and I was totally impressed. He is a Delta School Board Trustee Candidate.  He genuinely cares about education and youth. He earned his Doctorate in Education from SFU Burnaby! Ah, go figure he was at the Gala because he is a SFU alumnus. He is giving back! No wonder I like him.

Dr. Andy Basi  is a true gentleman.  He invited Heather to meet his friends. He is well connected and he navigated her through the crowds and introduced her like she was royalty! Heather THE King. He is a team player. Check out his website, for more information.

Actually I was so darn impressed with Andy I had to bump Robert down on my Heroes list to make room for Andy! Andy is hero # 16. Bravo Andy!
