Heather King face painting at Beach Clean up: Day 48: Not just another day at the beach

August 12, 2011 International Youth Day and Boundary Bay Beach Clean-up was extraordinary, truly extraordinary: 95 people  came out to clean-up Centennial Beach. Actually if you count my mom, the four chefs, myself, Maddy's Dad, and the camera chicky-poo from the South Delta Leader = 103!
Clean-up:

Most of the volunteer garbage picker-uppers were youth from Tsawwassen and Ladner, but the event attracted all ages (think mom) from North Delta, Surrey and from Newfoundland (True, story at the end).
Impressive haul! Thanks Neil (Corbett)

Look past the happy-ham and see the cakes from Safeway
and all the raffle prizes from local merchants!

Food:

In my books, an event is not an event without food! Trust me, this was an event extraordinaire: the food was exceptional!

Fruit trays from Save-On-Foods, veggie trays and dip from Thrifty Foods and cakes from Safeway! Check it out! (Little grocery store humour.)
Gees, another happy-ham, no wonder, check out the veggie and fruit trays

Apparently their parents don't have cameras.

Times have changed, now a high school student has to complete 30 hours of volunteer hours to graduate.  Special thanks to Andrew at Pacific Advertising for printing off the beautiful certificates of appreciation. Like Murray delivering a hotdog, Andrew delivers service with a smile!

My favourtie story of the day:

Meet Tony, a Newfie riding across Canada to raise money for disabled orphaned children in the Ukraine! (Er, can I say Newfie? Is it politically correct?) Heather has Newfoundland roots (no, not grey roots, Newfie roots) and a huge passion for children: instant kinship developed. Also meet Jr Andrew, Tony's mate who is taking the picture as Heather paints Tony face.
Tony another Hero - getting his face painted for the kids
The best part is today, Monday, August 15, 2011, Tony and his team started their journey across Canada. They are going coast-to-coast (Mini geography lesson: from Vancouver, BC to St. John's, Newfoundland.) Today they are riding to Hope, BC.

I like the guys, I like their mission, and I like their story, so I'll be weaving their story into the blog.  If you want to follow their story without my 2 cents worth you can follow Tony on Twitter @2011bikerider or go to their website at Operations Can Be Done.

Honestly, he isn't sticking his tongue out at me (I was being good)

Heather King Flying High - but not inhaling!: Day 47

Councillor King had a treat today.

She met with some fun and friendly pilots at the  Delta Heritage Air Park.

As a past airline employee (21 years), she was in her element and enjoyed mixing and mingling with the group.  Better yet, they have a pancake breakfast the second Sunday of every month- yup, watch and learn, today is the second Sunday - she scored a pancake breaky! She is good.  Perfect way to start of the day!

A perfect day and it only gets better, because Heather was invited for a ride in a small, 4-seater, single-engine plane to have a birds eye view of Delta. Lucky girl -- no wonder she loves her job! Darn, she's good!

A Cheshire cat - proud of her treat and ready for her adventure!

No barnstorming here! Heather assured me that they flew at 1200 feet and mostly over the bog and water so as not to disturb the residents or her pancakes!

Pumped on adrenaline,  Heather gasped, "What a gorgeous place we have to live in!  It is amazing - especially when you can go from one end of Delta to the other in minutes."

     A truly memorable day

Sold - looks like she wants to take it home!
"Thank you pilot Ray Roussy, Peter Vassilopoulos and Virginia Ivanicki for a flight of a lifetime"

Heather's famous last words, "I'm proud of the fact that I did not even need to use the 'little bag', that is a first for me!"

Obviously, Heather was in good hands! Thanks Ray, Peter, and Virginia for taking good care of my friend!

True confession: I am also an occasional user of the "little bag", but pilot friend Mireille Goyer, told me, "If there is no wind and the pilot is skilled and flies smoothly, no one would ever have to use the "little bag".

Mireille's is another amazing woman!  Check out her website at She is responsible for inspiring female pilots to introduce 1,647 girls & women to flying in 29 countries and 4 continents! Forever I am indebted to Mireille, because in  March, 2010 she introduced my daughter, myself, and my very favourite camera chick, Deneka Michaud to flying. No "little bags" were needed. One of my best memories - ever!

Tomorrow's blog will be about the International Youth Day Beach Clean-up at Boundary Bay.  I will have photos of  Heather's art work -- her recipe for success: start with a beautiful canvas and throw in a mix of love and talent! She was face painting, so believe me her canvases were beautiful before and after the paint!

You can always contact Heather.  Her  information is at the top of the page.

Heather King inspires and leads: Day 43: Leaders Inspire and lead by example

My daughter and 39 other youth from all around BC attended a Get Outside BC Youth Leadership Program in July. The kids all left the program with a task: create a community event that will inspire others to "get outside".
     http://www.delta-optimist.com/Local+teen+organizes+Boundary+beach+clean+Friday/5235750/story.html
Get Outside BC also provided a financial donation to help them with their events.

My daughter's event was going to be pretty low key - just a handful of kids pitching-in to clean-up the beach. Low key, until she talked to Heather, that is!

The two of them are very similar: they both love art, nature, sports, and volunteering - actually both of them are "compulsive volunteers", in a good way, of course. So my daughter asked Heather, if she would like to attend.

Heather's enthusiastic reply, "Great idea! I would love too help! What can I do?", fueled my daughter's imagination and ambition!

Truly, I shouldn't be surprised, that's what leaders do: leaders inspire and lead by example!

The gals showing their pre-beach clean-up haul!
Looks like the gals got the memo: wear shorts and pinky-coloured hoodie

Partaaay and get community hours for graduation, food and prizes!
A few weeks later and lots of planning, The International Youth Day Boundary Bay Beach Clean-up Partaaay, has been officially launched on Facebook, Twitter, South Delta Leader and in the Delta Optimist.
    http://www.bclocalnews.com/richmond_southdelta/southdeltaleader/community/127316923.html

Wow, it went from a low key event to a full fledged partaaay -- but of course, it's International Youth Day, we should be celebrating, after all, we were all young once! (I overheard on of the sign makers say, "Partaaay has to have at least three "a"s in it to be "sic'", oh, I am soooo old!)

    Here is the partaaay break-down:
    • Over 100 participants are expected,
    • Face Painting by Heather and two other volunteers,
    • every participant will receive a certificate documenting their community hours (important because 30 hours of volunteer hours are needed to graduate)
    • PRIZES
    • The first 100 people will receive a gift bag with a chocolate bar, pen and coupons for pizza, a cone, and a Delta Recreation pass. (Curtsey of: Shoppers, Rona, Freshslice, McDonalds, and Delta Parks & Rec.)
    • Major prizes curtsey of : Albany Books, Centre Stage, Lucky Surf & Skate Company and Rogers Video
    • FOOD
    • Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club will be flipping the burgers and hotdogs
    • Safeway will supply a big cake.
    • Save-on Foods will supply  fruit platters,
    • Thrifty Foods will supply the veggie trays
    Friday, August 12 noon - 2 PM
Pacific Advertising will print the community volunteer certificates for the students who participate in the clean-up and Home Hardware Building Centre will supply the garbage bags for the clean-up.
Boundary Bay -- look for the blue tent in front of the pond

So come, bring your family, and celebrate International Youth Day at Boundary Bay from noon - 2 on Friday.

To find Heather, look for the blue tent in front of the pond and the Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club cooking hotdogs.

It might not be the best time to tell her your concerns, but you can always contact her before or after her face painting gig -- Her  information is at the top of the page.

Heather King works with all levels of government: Day 40: I got the memo!

    Monday, August 8, 2011

I am feeling a bit smug.  I got the memo! I'm in with the girls! Ahhhhh, "It feels good, so good!"

It feels as good as being picked 1st in PE class!  OK,  I am kind of stretching this, as I am sure, I was NEVER picked 1st or even 31st in my PE class.

Here's the skinny -- Heather calls me, 'cause Kerry-Lynne (our MP for Delta South) calls her and I AM the solution!!! (OH, let me gloat and bask in the swell of my ego.) Kerry-Lynne requested  my pictures of her open house (August 2nd).  If I captured a shot that she missed, then  she would like to post it on her website! OK, how cool is that? I told you that's like being picked 1st!

OH, I cannot believe my ill fortune!   My daughter has just reminded me that she took the photos at Kerry-Lynne's open house and I already blogged it! Drats! Drats and double drats! She is right...it was posted August 3rd:
"My daughter, who has helped Heather with her last three campaigns and who met Kerry-Lynne at the SunFest, wanted to come and take the pictures.

So in a matter of minutes, I was handing over my camera and demoted to driver."

Just like in school: I was not picked 1st. Kerry-Lynne wants my daughter's pictures, not mine. Sigh! Easy come, easy go. However, opportunity knocked and I kicked the door wide open and sent Kerry-Lynne all the photos "WE" have taken of her.

Apparently Linda didn't get the August 2nd memo (the girls are wearing black and white), but I got the August 8th memo, (Kerry-Lynne wants to look at my photos!!!)  OK, I am not deep, I am still feeling smug and pretending that I was picked 1st!

If you have a concern, contact Heather. Her information is at the top of the page.
